Humor, Courage, and Tears

Two recent books by Tim Tingle celebrate the courage and humor of Native people during times of social injustice. First, a description of SALTYPIE: A CHOCTAW JOURNEY FROM DARKNESS INTO LIGHT.

Actually has there ever been a time in this country when Native Americans have not been struggling with social injustice issues? The stories will make you cry and laugh – and think about social justice issues past and present.  The photos and illustrations will draw you even further into the story-telling mystique created by Tim Tingle.

SALTYPIE: A CHOCTAW JOURNEY FROM DARKNESS INTO LIGHT  is illustrated by Karen Clarkson.  “American Indians are the least understood and the most misunderstood of us all.” Tim Tingle uses this quote from John F. Kennedy (1963).  Perhaps even more misunderstood are American Indian families.  Enjoy this delightful memoir told by and about one of the best storytellers, Tim Tingle.

CROSSING BOK CHITTO illustrated by Jeanne Rorex Bridges is a stunning picture book to share with young readers.  This true story shows how one clever girl, a young Choctaw, was able to save the lives of Black slaves trying to escape to freedom. This story reflects the power of friendship as well as the motivation to risk everything to obtain freedom. Tim Tingle’s story-telling magic sings throughout this picture book.  CROSSING BOK CHITTO was recognized the Texas Bluebonnet Master Award List, 2008-2009.
