Black and White

BLACK AND WHITE by Larry Dane Brimmer

“Bombed, beaten, banned, and imprisoned….”  Booklist, starred review

“A fascinating look at one of the most crucial places and periods in the civil rights movement through two polar opposites.”  Kirkus Reviews, starred review

This is the third book in Brimmer’s award-winning trio of books that look deeply at the leaders and events of the Civil Rights Movement.   BLACK AND WHITE follows the development of Reverend Fred L. Shuttlesworth from preacher to nonviolent activist, culminating in his confrontation with Eugene “Bull” Connor, the imposing organizer of southern segregationists with the backing of the KKK.

Brimmer’s earlier book, BIRMINGHAM SUNDAY, describes the bombing of Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church that took the lives of four young girls. Brimner’s research and discussion dramatically place that incident in its historical context.

The second book in the series, WE ARE ONE, tells of the life of civil rights activist and leader Bayard Rustin, the “intellectual engineer” of the Civil Rights Movement.  Brimmer shows us this little-known figure in his proper and important role.

All three books are written for middle-grade to YA readers, yet they are equally informative and engaging for readers of any age, including adults.

Larry Dane Brimner received a Sibert Honor Award for “Black and White: The Confrontation between Reverend Fred. L. Shuttlesworth and Eugene ‘Bull’ Connor.” This award is given to the most distinguished informational book for children.
