Dignity for All: Safeguarding LGBT Students

With anti-bullying curricula in the news very recently, Dignity for All: Safeguarding LGBT Students is a timely effort by Dr. Peter DeWitt, an elementary school principal and former teacher. This soft-cover reference is an informative and efficient resource for teachers, librarians, counselors, and school administrators. (DeWitt is openly gay so he knows what it’s like to be a gay student, and he also has professional advice to offer as an administrator.) It covers a comprehensive spectrum of potent issues such as bullying, school pro-activeness,  gay-straight alliances, school policy issues, and curricular matters. It also contains “vignettes” from professionals in various related fields, which focus on incidents, policies, and innovations. (One of those professionals happens to be me, but of course that has nothing to do with my suggesting you buy this book for your library or classroom. Niente.) It’s a quick read at 104 pages, and I think it would even make a good book-group selection for its capacity to incite conversation on this worthy topic.
