A grandmother’s Christmas stories bind cultures and generations

ArturoWhen small Arturo smashes his abuela’s Christmas tree ornament, a blown-glass bird that is a cherished reminder of her past friend, Arturo himself is crushed. KE Lewis, the illustrator of Anne Broyles’ picture book, Arturo and the Navidad Birds, captures the boy’s remorse as well as the respect he feels toward his grandmother, his Abue Rosa.

Author Anne Broyles also wrote Priscilla and the Hollyhocks, a picture book telling of the true story of a girl’s journey from slave to free woman.  Her book Arturo and the Navidad Birds is bilingual in English and Spanish and is a tribute to the role grandmother’s play as caregivers and keepers of family stories. As Arturo and Abue Rosa decorate their tree with a tiny mouse in a walnut shell, a wooden donkey, an ornament made with coffee beans, Lewis shows generations of memories in brown-tone in contrast with the full color of the present. A child reader can experience the present excitement with Arturo along with the past as his grandmother imbues each ornament with meaning and memory. So when Arturo crashes the glass bird ornament in play, and its wings can’t be repaired no matter HOW much white glue he administers, the reader is going to feel the tension of the little’s boy’s dilemma about love and responsibility. In addition to being bilingual, the text in English includes many Spanish words. It wasn’t clear to me as I was reading what Hispanic culture Broyles draws on for Arturo’s story. Later I saw an interview with Broyles and found that she sought seven native Spanish speakers from different countries to give feedback on the Spanish-language translation and she adapted it with their feedback. Arturo and the Navidad Birds is a tender story to share this Christmas eve to remind us of our larger lives and universal connections over generations and cultures.
