When the Sun Shines on Antarctica And Other Poems about the Frozen Continent

index

Irene Latham has given us a little treat in When the Sun Shines on Antarctica And Other Poems about the Frozen Continent. It’s both poetically entertaining and informative non fiction. Each poem is followed by an explanation of the subject of the poem, and illustrator Anna Wadham provides complementary watercolors. Children (and I…) learn about animal life such as Emperor Penguins and Leopard Seals, and also about the unique flora of that seemingly barren icescape. There’s even a poem about icebergs.

The book (from Lerner, 32 pages) is aimed at listeners/readers from Pre-K through grade 4, and includes a very enlightening glossary of terms at the end.

Here’s a sample from a poem about humpback whales, silverfish, and barnacles contributing to an oceanic choir:

Listen for

that moment

when their voices

pause

and you

will hear

the ocean’s

applause
