Many years ago all things came to be: the various geographic regions, plants and animals, as well as each region’s Original People. Their origin stories spoke of coming from the ocean, or from a hollow log, from an opening in the ground or the mountains. Some hunted; others fished or farmed. Some were warriors and some taught while others created things of beauty. The People came from various ways of life, but all believed the Earth to be sacred and that all People needed to take care of her, our earth. Over time, things changed. Strangers visited and liked what they saw. More strangers came and times changed for the People. Soon in order to survive, it became necessary for the People to agree to harsh things: to give up their languages and their lands in order to survive. However, many elders continued to teach the young ones about their tribal history, their original languages and cultures so they in turn taught generations after generations. And the People not only survived, they continued.

Originally published in 1977, this book honors the tenacity of Native Peoples while celebrating the wisdom, strength, and love of the land by both ancestors and present day Natives who work to ensure that the People will always continue.
