This is the Nest that Robin Built

By Denise Fleming

With a little help from her friends, Robin is able to build a safe nest to lay her eggs.

It’s Spring, and time for Robin to build her nest. As she begins, many friends want to help. Squirrel uses his strong teeth to trim the twigs. Dog adds string to help anchor the nest. Horse wants to share some of his straw while Pig mixes up mud to plaster the straw. One by one, many friends help Robin prepare a strong nest to hold the precious blue eggs she will lay. After they hatch, the tufted fledglings are safe in their strong nest, until they are old enough and eager enough to fly away!

Fleming’s fresh play on an old familiar rhyme breathes new life into it. The repetition of the verses will help young readers learn more about rhyming words. The eager willingness of the animals to help Robin will guide children to learn more about cooperation and collaboration. Her bold use of color, textures, and printmaking techniques with collage makes the text come as alive as Spring itself. Highly recommended for school and home libraries.
