Nerdy Book Club Winners: Poetry plus Novels in Verse — drum roll please!

Need a great book to begin your New Year?  Look no further.

Here is the Nerdy Book Club winners of poetry including novels-in-verse –  Blood Water Paint was reviewed here on Pirate Tree last month – take a look.  It’s an incredible historical fiction written in verse about a woman painted of the Renaissance (yes, a Woman painter, acclaimed as the best of her times).https://nerdybookclub.wordpress.com/2018/12/29/the-2018-nerdies-poetry-and-novels-in-verse/

For a very different type of read, I suggest —

CAN I TOUCH YOUR HAIR?: POEMS OF RACE, MISTAKES, AND FRIENDSHIP by authors Irene Latham and Charles Waters, Illustrated by Sean Qualls and Selina Alko  This amazing two-voiced poem was published by Carolrhoda, January 2018

Listen to this honest conversation written in verse between a Black Boy (Charles Waters) and a White Girl (Irene Latham). The two students have to work together on a classroom project that they both imagine might be too difficult. Co-operate with a stranger? Impossible. But they talk, listen and learn, about each other, about racism, and about the power of letting go of stereotypes and working together.
