Borrowing Bunnies Written by Cynthia Lord, Photographs by John Bald, Illustrations by Hazel Mitchell

This is the true story of two bunnies, Peggotty and Benjamin, who had been neglected by their previous owners. After being rescued by Cottontail Rabbit Rescue in Maine, the two were fostered out to Cynthia Lord who guided them back to health.

Sometimes abused pets need to have a foster family, one that will help them to learn to trust people again. Peggotty and Benjamin are Netherland Dwarf bunnies, but their first owners did not feed them enough and kept them in wired cages outside, even in winter in Maine. When rescued, the bunnies were hungry, thirsty, and afraid. The center asked Ms. Lord if she could take them to her home and help them get better. Not only did she agree but her photographer husband, John Bald, photographed the bunnies’ remarkable journey toward to a forever home.

Lord’s sweet story brings their tale to life. Included on many pages are Mitchell’s endearing illustrations that make the text pop! Bald’s remarkable photographs are so detailed that readers will witness each step of the bunnies’ healing. Highly recommended for inclusion in any family, school or public library’s picture book collections.
