BIM, BAM, BOP … AND OONA — a very different duck story

Being different can be difficult especially if you are a duck that waddles instead of runs. Coming in last … last one to the pond, last one back to the barn is not fun. “Last is a blot on my life,” says Oona to her frog friend, Roy. But Roy points out that Oona has her own special talents. Creating gadgets and gizmos from scraps and strings is one of Oona’s special talents.

So how can being different become being best? Oona figures out in a delightful way, a very high-flying way!

Jacqueline Briggs Martin, the author of Bim,Bam, Bop … and Oona has published many unusual and delightful children’s books, including Snowflake Bentley which won the 1999 Caldecott medal. My favorite book of Jacquline’s is Creekfinding: A True Story, also published by the University of Minnesota Press and was one of the new York Public Library’s 100 Best Books of 2017.   Creekfinding is a true story of how a buried forgotten, dried-up creek become discovered and renewed and soon filled with all sorts of life, even big plump fish.

The illustrator, Larry Day, also is an award-winning children’s book artist. One of his many books, Not Afraid of Dogs, was winner of the Golden Kite Award.

Bim, Bam Bop … and Oona invites young readers to think about how their own “being different,” can be an opportunity to use their own special talents and truly “fly high!”
