Most people enjoy walking along seashores to find shells of one kind or another. Many realize that these shells were first a home to sea animals like mollusks, but few understand that their shells have other jobs to do, too. Mollusks are ocean animals without legs and with soft bodies so besides being homes, their shells provide protection.

Not all of their shells are alike because not all mollusks are alike. Some have two shells joined together called bivalves like clams and oysters. Most often these bivalves dwell on the ocean floor, but if danger threatens, some can open and shut to get away. Other mollusks can open their shells to grab bits of good things to eat while others protect themselves through camouflage.

Author Stewart has explored seashores and their seashell treasures since she was a child and has done extensive research to bring this fascinating book to life.

Illustrator Brannen has been studying and drawing seashells since she was young, too. Her illustrations portray children around the world learning about seashells of all kinds. This delightful and informative book will make a wonderful addition to any home, school, and public library.
