Billie B. Brown, Bully Buster written by Sally Rippen and Illustrated by Aki Fukuoka

Billie B. Brown wears a grumpy frown. The reason why is because there is a fifth grade bully, Jason, who is making her life difficult. Yesterday, she took her new soccer ball to school so she and her friends could have fun at recess. Suddenly, Jason walked over to Billie and her friends and kicked the ball far high up into the peppercorn tree. When Billie complained to him, he poked her on the shoulder and told her he would make big trouble for her if she told anyone. Of course she told her best friend, Jack, who wants her to tell Mrs. Walton, their teacher, but Billie is afraid to do that. They decide not to play on the field anymore.

However as time goes by, the bullying only escalates, Billie becomes so very sick and tired of Jason that she says the one thing that gets to him. Later, when Jason and she are alone and talk more, Billie understands why Jason acts like such a bully.

This first book in Rippon’s Billie B. Brown early reader series helps young readers learn to make better choices at school.

Illustrator Fukuuoka’s lively line drawings are a wonderful match to the text.

Highly recommended for primary classes and for home libraries for parents to share with young children.
