Tanna’s Owl

by Rachel Qitsualik-Tinsley and Sean Qitsualik-Tinsley. Illustrated by Yong Ling Kang

Instead of the standard plot of a child finding and nurturing a wounded animal, the protagonist of Tanna’s Owl is a bit annoyed and inconvenienced when her father brings home a needy owl. Based on the real experience of Cree author Rachel Qitsualik-Tinsley, Tanna’s Owl is a gently realistic story about a child helping out nature and then letting nature take its unsentimental course.

At 32 pages, Tanna’s Owl is aimed at early readers, and was published in January of this year by Inhabit Media. I think it’s important to note their mission statement here: Inhabit Media Inc. is the first Inuit-owned, independent publishing company in the Canadian Arctic. We aim to promote and preserve the stories, knowledge, and talent of the Arctic, while also supporting research in Inuit mythology and the traditional Inuit knowledge of Nunavummiut (residents of Nunavut, Canada’s northernmost territory).
