Scribble & Author by Miri Leshem-Pelly

Scribble & Author

By Miri Leshem-Pelly

With a color spot plus a few pencil lines, Author creates Scribble. At first Scribble basks on the calm shore of The Beginning of the Story, safe and content, but she is alone and curious about the nearby winding road so asks Author where should she go next? Author points out that it’s her journey so she must decide what to do. Scribble wants to find a friend. Author suggests that The Middle of the Story might be where her wish will come true.

Like any good teacher or parent, Author does not solve Scribble’s problems and like all good stories, challenges arise. As Scribble journeys though many difficulties, she learns to rely on herself to overcome her fears.

The tone of Leshem-Pelly’s text is gentle and supportive while nudging Scribble to believe in herself as she solves various problems. Carefully placed within the watercolor art are collage “tools” to help Scribble meet each challenge. When Scribble comes to the wide River of Questions, Author has left an encouraging message, “You can do it!” on a sheet of paper. Scribble asks to use it then folds it into a boat that carries her to safety. The challenges continue until at the end, Scribble has used her imagination not only to solve her problems, but also to make her wish come true.

This encouraging book will be a perfect way to introduce self-reliance and independent thinking so young readers can conquer their own challenges.
