From Far Away by Robert Munsch & Saoussan Askar ; illustrated by Rebecca Green

Victims of war (Lebanon, in this case) are not always fatalities. In this basic story, the narrator (based on the real-life Saoussan Askar) has been traumatized by endless  violence in her native country, and upon immigrating to the West, she expects shooting everywhere she goes. (Fortunately she has relocated to Canada and not the United States….)

Adaptability is not as simple for children as we adults may think. There are language issues, for example, and something as simple as asking for the bathroom confounds her. (An illustration shows other students gaping at her inability to communicate.) She also sees a paper skeleton and thinks there is active evil afoot. Eventually she does adjust and adapt, especially to the language, to the point where she tries to Anglicize her name to Susan from Saoussan.(Her mother nixes the idea.)

From Far Away appears to be a paperback edition of a 1995 release, with a new cover, reprinted by our reliable Annick Press in August of this year.It has 32 pages and a target audience of Pre-K to second graders.
