The Alphabet of Peculiar Creatures

By Katie Abey

Did you know that Axolotls are amphibians and come in many colors, even in a pale pink with red eyes? The name comes from the canine Aztec god, Xolotl, and means “water dog.” The entry for D is Draco, but has no connection to the Harry Potter Books: instead of being a story wizard, this Draco is a lizard with specialized ribs that allow it to glide through the air. The H entry is for Hyrax, a small mammal that is related to the elephant; the Hyrax does not have a trunk, but do have similar teeth and skulls like elephants. Numbats are found only in Australia and can eat up to 10,000 termites a day! The red-faced Uakari monkeys live in the Amazon and the males have red faces. These unusual creatures and many others are introduced to young readers in this alphabet book.

Abey’s text introduces young readers to many cute, creepy, and unusual creatures. Her fun and colorful illustrations will delight readers. Each entry word has not only succinct information, but also has a simple, kid-friendly pronunciation guide. Teachers will appreciate that this book has STEM extensions. Highly recommended for any home, classroom or public library.
