BEFORE SHE WAS HARRIET — a tribute to Harriet Tubman

We are pleased to post this review by guest author, Rachel Funez:

Before She was Harriet, by Lesa Cline-Ransome and James E. Ransome

Before She Was Harriet is a beautifully lyrical, poetic, and moving tribute to Harriet Tubman, a great American Hero. Working backwards through time, this nonfiction picture book biography reveals Harriet Tubman’s strength, courage, and kindness, and tells an incredible story of resilience and determination. In addition to her well-known roll as a conductor on the underground railroad, she was a suffragist, a general, a Union spy, a nurse, a daughter and aunt, and a former slave – a woman.

“who dreamed

of living long enough

to one day

be old

stiff and achy

tired and worn and wrinkled

and free.”

Go grab this book, and prepare to be moved and inspired.

This book was published in 2017 but is a timely topic with the recent discussions about the $20 bill, and the new movie coming out about Harriet Tubman.
