Together Things

by Michelle Vasiliu

This book explores how a child might perceive mental illness in one of her parents. A little girl (unnamed throughout) and her father do lots of “together things” that require going out doors and expending lots of energy. When the dad lapses into a depression to the point of needing hospitalization, the girl experiences a torrent of new feelings such as sadness and intense anger. But, as children will, she adapts, and learns how to spend time with him within his new limitations.

The 32 pages of illustrations by Gwynneth Jones are bold and expressive, very positive images that mirror the optimism in the child-narrator’s spirit.

Together Things is marketed for readers 4-8 years of age, and was published in February by EK Books.
